first_imgCommentary by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Some of you old timers – who have reached the age of 45 or older – may have remembered a 1980s Wendy’s Hamburger commercial. It featured three old ladies looking at this puny hamburger – presumably from McDonald’s or Burger King. One of the old lady kept asking “Where’s the Beef?”It’s one of those ad slogans that sticks with us for an eternity. It’s been more than 30 years since that commercial first ran, but I still remember it as if it was yesterday. It is so relevant on so many levels. This whole Wellington Wheat Capital Manor – Wellington Housing Authority board controversy has me asking that very question. “Where’s the Beef?”I’m not sure I have ever written a story, covered a controversy – where answers are so elusive. Usually, I can pinpoint exactly what is wrong – who are the players, what are the agendas. With this controversy, I might as well be solving the Rubik’s cube or that new computer game “2048.”This week, Wellington City Manager Roy Eckert made the bold move of asking for the resignation of WHA Chairman Kelli McComb before removing her outright. He listed “nonfeasance, malfeasance, and misfeasance” as the reason without any further explanation – at least publicly (see story here).I’ve been in the news business for 30 years now. There aren’t many “falling off the chair” moments left in me. Murders, tornadoes, world shocking sports upsets — whatever, I’ve seen that, done that. This removal caught me by surprise. Luckily, I caught myself on my way off the chair before I hurt something.I have sent Eckert a request via e-mail for an interview and I hope he accepts my invitation. I want to know why.McComb was serving as a volunteer. She also is a business woman with a legitimate accounting consulting firm in town. Trust for McComb is essential. So if you have a city manager who is questioning her of wrongdoing, then, by golly, it is only fair to not only her but the public at large as to why she is being accused of “nonfeasance, malfeasance, and misfeasance.”By the same token, let’s talk about Melissa Hamlin, executive director of Wheat Capital Manor. She has been under much scrutiny the past three months- maybe longer about her performance at the Manor – specifically financial affairs. Yet, I can sympathize with her, because no concrete accusation has been made public for which she can specifically respond. She has been targeted with many rumors and innuendos. Should she at least have the benefit to answer to those accusations?I love how people on the comment section and other social media websites who have proclaimed a person’s guilt. But nothing has been publicly available where you could make such judgments either way.Am I the only person in Wellington, who can sympathize with both Ms. McComb and Hamlin even though they are on opposite sides of the issue?I have heard many off-the-record comments, and thought perhaps I was getting close to the crux of the story. But then the news of WHA board member Alois Hutchison resigning surfaced the other day. This surprised me because she has been a vocal supporter of Hamlin’s. At that time, it appeared as if the investigation was going to go a different way. Then came the McComb removal.Huh?So, I as a representative of John Q Public is left wondering, “Where’s the Beef?” Why do we have three WHA Chairmans who have resigned or been removed? Why do we have city council meetings with over 50 Manor residents in attendance during the month of December? Why is Ms. Hamlin fighting for her job?And I’m left wondering what the atmosphere is really like at the Manor. I can’t help but think there are people living there who would just as soon see this issue go away and live a life of tranquility.I know one thing. If I was looking for HUD housing for a relative or myself, I would think twice before signing on with Wheat Capital Manor. It has nothing to do with the quality housing or care they can provide. I just would not want to involve my relative or myself to a toxic atmosphere. People who seek public housing have enough drama in their lives without having to worry about things they have nothing to do with. Therefore, as representative of John Q. Public this is what I want:•I want to know the specific accusations against Hamlin.•I want Hamlin to have the opportunity to respond to those specific accusations.•I want Eckert to specifically explain why McComb was removed from the board.•I believe an independent financial audit and investigation from someone outside HUD, the city or the WHA/Manor is necessary.•And most of all, I’d like to have this issue defined – with boundaries – so we can start making our way toward a resolution.I’m sure there are lawyers in the background telling everyone to stonewall. But what has all this stonewalling gotten us so far? Nothing has changed except more resignations, more innuendos, and more divisiveness. If there is a future court date, or a future federal/state/county/city/Sumner Newscow investigation – let’s cross that path when we get there. But, please, for the life of heaven and earth, give us John Q Public residents a little nibble of that “beef.”We are hungry.Follow us on Twitter. And while that independent audit team is at it, they can examine the city’s books, back to the beginning of Mr. Eckert’s predecessor. Westar rebate and much more. Poof. Gone. If Hamlin and Eckert answer your questions, then this issue be closed forever. If Hamlin and Eckert don’t answer your questions, the entire community will know they are very guilty. I think that board members McComb and Ferguson had axes to grind. I stand with Wes Smith and Larry Schalk! Some people love to stir up trouble. There was a lack of information as to exactly what was the problem to begin with. Transparency should have been requested from all sides. This would include the board and the director. Them you throw Jim Valentines news conference that should have never been held and the circus has come to town. I have no clue what has gone on down at the manor. As for most citizens of this community I don’t go there very often. But this for no better term dirty laundry needs to get cleaned up. I believe the city manager has probably consulted legal counsel before making some whim irrational decision. I have no issues with everyone answering questions. But the first one is what was the issue that started all of this mess. Let’s start there and work foward. You are speaking of a persons ability to earn and income here and all of these unfounded comments should not be allowed. Along with the financial audit, policy adherence should also be a key investigative issue. I would like to see documentation on how the vacancies are filled and that it is truly based on the rules of HUD instead of who you know or are related to. I think the comments above regarding Mr. Lee’s death and placing any blame on any employees at WHA are ludicrous. I believe slandering either McComb or Hamlin in these comments are not needed. I believe we need transparency, without threats of lawsuits, and more working together. I firmly believe where there is smoke there is fire, and there is something going on down there. Let’s get to the bottom of it, figure out what the root cause of all this turmoil is, and get it resolved. We are done with anything that involves the Wheat Manor Capital caring of patients issues since these are not issues that have played in the McComb removal or formal accusations against Hamlin. Let’s stick to the topic at hand. Report Reply 1 reply · active 283 weeks ago 12Next » Post a new comment Enter text right here!
